The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants may not be a perfect movie, but it is iconic to Millennial and Gen Z women who grew up believing in the power of friendship, love, and yeah, okay, maybe just a little bit of magic. This tale of four close friends may hinge on a slightly silly premise (they find a pair of pants that fits all of them perfectly, despite their varying clothing sizes) and decide that it’s a sign: This pair of jeans was meant to hold them all together as they each went their separate ways for the summer, because every few weeks, whoever was in possession of the pants would send it via mail to one of the other three friends. And so began the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
While each of the friends deals with their own life-altering circumstance—first love, family troubles, grief, loss—the pants keep the connected, especially in a time when social media wasn’t really a thing yet. And even as they grew apart, the pants gave them a reason to always stay in touch and to never forget the people who were rooting for them from afar.
So to celebrate the movie’s 20th anniversary (yes, really!), here are the best quotes from The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants:
1.
Kostos (Michael Rady): Some people show off their beauty because they want the world to see it. Others try to hide their beauty because they want the world to see something else
Lena (Alexis Bledel): And what do you see?
Kostos: Everything.
2.
Tibby (Amber Tamblyn): Well, maybe sometimes it’s easier to be mad at the people you trust.
Carmen (America Ferrera): Why? Why is that?
Tibby: Because you know they’ll always love you, no matter what.
3.
Lena (Alexis Bledel): There’s a part of me that wants to let him in but then I feel myself put this wall up and I don’t understand why. Maybe that’s what strikes me most about Kostos: that despite everything he’s suffered, he can still look at life in the most uncomplicated way. I’ve never known that kind of faith. It makes me so sad that people like Kostos and Bridget who have lost everything can still be open to love… while I, who have lost nothing, am not.
4.
Bridget (Blake Lively): I just want to feel good and happy and alive. Because if I feel alive, then it doesn’t seem like she’s dead. And if I’m not sad, then it proves I’m not like her.
5.
Bailey (Jenna Boyd): You know what I like most about the stars? You look at them, at all of them up there, and you just know there’s gotta be something more than…
Tibby (Amber Tamblyn): Life?
Bailey: There has to be.
Tibby: Are you scared?
Bailey: Not of dying, really. It’s more that I’m afraid of time. And not having enough of it. Time to figure out who I’m supposed to be… to find my place in the world before I have to leave it. I’m afraid of what I’ll miss.
6.
Carmen (America Ferrera): Why did you leave? Why did you have to go? And then tell me that we were gonna be closer, but that never happened. And why does Paul visit his alcoholic dad every month, but you only visit me twice a year? And I know you… you just seem so happy about being Paul and Chris’s dad, but you never even had the time to be mine.
Al (Bradley Whitford): I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.
Carmen: I Wish that were enough, Dad.
7.
Tibby (Amber Tamblyn): I brought something for you. Ta da.
Bailey (Jenna Boyd): The Traveling Pants.
Tibby: Yeah, I just got them back from Lena.
Bailey: The one in Greece.
Tibby: Yeah. She said that we were right all along and they really are magic, and I don’t know the details, but I do know Lena, and for her to say that means that it must be true. So I was thinking, you know, maybe you could have them for a while.
Bailey: They don’t fit me, remember?
Tibby: Yeah, I know, but that doesn’t matter. None of it really matters. You have to take them, Bailey. Okay, you have to let them help you… please. I know that you’re tired, okay, but you can’t give up, these pants will give you a miracle. You have to believe.
Bailey: Tibby, the Pants have already worked their magic on me. They brought me to you.
8.
Lena (Alexis Bledel): Papou, I need to say something to you. You can pretend that you don’t understand me, but I know you do. People have always said to me that I take after Yia Yia, that I have her face and her smile, but what no one ever sees is that there’s this whole other part of me that’s just like you: quiet, and stubborn, and afraid of showing too much. And then I met someone who changed everything and he showed me that I can take a chance, even when it’s only for a moment.
9.
Bailey (Jenna Boyd): Hey, it’s me, Bailey. You don’t have to use this in your movie or anything, although now that I think of it, fainting in Wallman’s does kind of qualify me as a loser. But then again, wearing a price sticker on your forehead probably makes you one, too. You know, I don’t know, Tibby, maybe the truth is there’s a little bit of loser in all of us, you know? Being happy isn’t having everything in your life be perfect. Maybe it’s about stringing together all the little things like wearing these pants or getting to a new level of Dragon’s Lair—making those count for more than the bad stuff. Maybe we just get through it, and that’s all we can ask for.
10.
Carmen (America Ferrera): It would be easy to say that the pants changed everything that summer. But looking back now, I feel like our lives changed because they had to, and that the real magic of the pants was in bearing witness to all of this and in somehow holding us together when it felt like nothing would ever be the same again. Some things never would be.
Lena (Alexis Bledel): But we know now that no matter how far we traveled on our own separate paths…
Bridget (Blake Lively): Somehow we would always find our way back to each other.
Tibby (Amber Tamblyn): And with that, we could get through anything.
Bridget: To us. Who we were, and who we are. And who we’ll be.
Tibby: To the pants.
Lena: And to sisterhood.
Carmen: And this moment, and the rest of our lives.
