Robert Nesta Marley, better known as the Jamaican singer-songwriter Bob Marley, was born on February 6th, 1945, in Nine Miles, St. Ann, Jamaica. Marley had a chaotic upbringing, being kidnapped by his father as a boy and brought to live with an older woman in Kingston. He was eventually brought home by a family friend. However, in his young teens, he decided to return to Kingston and work as an apprentice to a welder. During his apprenticeship, he was exposed to the wonderful jazzy rhythms of ska (a musical blend of American blues and native mento). Soon after, he pursued the opportunity of producing his first song, “Judge Not,” with the producer, Leslie Kong.
With his newfound career as a musician, he formed a vocal group with friends, naming themselves “The Wailers.” Their first song, “Simmer Down,” grew increasingly popular within Jamaica’s urban poor communities. It turned into their anthem and sparked class-related tensions within the Jamaican culture. The Wailers’ Rastafarian faith also grew increasingly popular in these communities, contributing to Jamaica’s rising tension. For many years, The Wailers put out hit ska records and then reggae records around 1969. However, after the release of reggae album “Catch a Fire,” Marley gained superstardom. This set him on his own path, causing The Wailers to disperse in 1974. During these years, Marley also began family life by marrying Alpharita Constantia Anderson, commonly known as Rita Marley. Together, he and Rita Marley raised 6 children, 3 of their own and 3 Marley adopted from Rita Marley’s prior relationships. It is rumored that Bob Marley bore 6 other children with different mothers due to his various marital affairs.
In his last years of fame, Marley grew to have a strong political influence. He hosted the “One Love” peace concert to defuse political tension in Jamaica. He also performed at the ceremony of Zimbabwe’s independence. In 1981, a month before his death from skin cancer, Marley received the Order of Merit from the Jamaican government. His legacy continues to impact today’s world with his popular messages of peace, love, and unity. In fact, the retrospective album Legend produced in 1984, became the best-selling reggae album worldwide with over 12 million copies sold. Discover an uplifting Bob Marley quote or lyric below. 14.
“Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul, and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future. Dreams that will never come true. Goals that were never achieved. And many disappointments that life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough. Rather, they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy, or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people–like a note, song, or walk–become invaluable treasures. They are kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid; it’s like being young again. Colors seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind, or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day. And in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting, and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.” – Bob Marley
15.
